Hawks net four in win over Central

For the first time this season, Triton’s boys soccer team finds itself with a winning record after hammering rival Harnett Central 4-1 on Monday.

The Hawks (7-6-2, 3-2) have won six of their last eight games since their second loss to rival South Johnston.

"Getting back over .500 is huge for us," said Triton coach Brian Foster. "And the continued movement up the 3A rankings in MaxPreps is a big deal as well. The goal for this team at the beginning of the season was to make state playoffs and it feels like we're getting closer and closer. Our record is something that the boys can look at as an indicator of our improvement.

Senior midfielder Kevin Paz scored a brace with a pair of goals for Triton. Sophomore Benny Villalvazo and junior Carson Smith each added one goal. Senior forward Arthur Torres dealt three assists, and senior Julian Serrano added the other assist.

"Arthur Torres put his stamp on the game early in the first half with several good runs, but was unable to finish," Foster said. "Then he showed his maturity by looking for his shot less and his teammates more. He ended the game with three assists and it was a major factor in our victory. Kevin Paz was able to position himself really well all night, connecting with Arthur towards the end of the first half and finishing well in front of goal helped us carry a 2-1 advantage into halftime."

Freshman Dariel Tamayo scored the lone goal for Central (2-11, 1-4).

The Hawks will try to continue their positive momentum as they travel to Lee County (5-7-1, 3-2) on Wednesday, while the Trojans will try to bounce back in a trip to Union Pines (8-5-2, 3-2).

"Like any team looking to reach the playoffs, we need to maintain our focus," Foster said. "We have to continue to play well against difficult teams and believe in our style of play."
