To the editor:
My name is Gary Peacock and I have been the corporate manager of Warren Aviation for the past seven plus years.
We were awarded the contract in 2013 and since that time we have increased the fuel sales by 981%. We went from 18,000 gallons per year to 198,000 gallons per year in 2019.
You, the taxpayers have been blessed with more sales tax and property tax income than ever in the history of the Harnett County Airport (Jetport). In seven plus years we have not had a single complaint from the county. We have received many praises over the years from county officials and customers alike, but not one complaint.
In the Monday, March 15 (Harnett) County Board (of Commissioners) meeting your three newly elected commissioners, Lewis Weatherspoon, Brooks Matthews and Matt Nicol voted to cancel our contract with the county. No reason was given. They just simply did it.
They feel that government can run it better than Warren Aviation. I have spoken with federal, state and other county officials. No one can ever remember the government taking over a private enterprise unless it was failing.
We were thriving and have been since the original contract was issued. The problem with this change is now you, the taxpayer, are on the hook for all the liability if something goes wrong. You didn’t have a choice in the matter. Your three commissioners chose for you. They know more than anyone right?
None of these three have ever spent a day in business in their lives. One is a realtor, one is a retired educator, and the other is an insurance adjuster. Taxpayers, I hope you remember this liability burden they have placed upon you when election time comes. I will be sure to remind you.
